Embracing History and Culture: A Memorable Encounter with the Schaumburg Township Deaf Social and Support Group at the Polish Museum of America's 150th Anniversary

On October 3, 2023 the Polish Museum of America hosted the Schaumburg Township Deaf Social and Support Group with two ASL translators. The 21 person group was very interested in the history of the Museum and were extremely excited to learn that they were present on the very day of the 150th anniversary of the PRCUA. They were keen to learn about Polish history and asked many questions. As they visited the exhibits, several members of the group dug deep into their memories and remembered their own Polish roots. For us this was also a first, the first group tour of a hearing impaired visitors touring with translators. It was a great pleasure and privilege to host them and to learn from each other.

3 października Muzeum gościło grupę głuchoniemych z Schaumburg Township wraz z dwoma tłumaczami ASL. Goście byli ciekawi historii Muzeum Polskiego w Ameryce i bardzo się przejęli dowiadując się, że odwiedzają muzeum w samą 150. rocznicę powstania Zjednoczenia Polskiego Rzymsko-Katolickiego w Ameryce. Również byli bardzo ciekawi historii Polski i zadawali – przez tłumaczy – wiele pytań. Zwiedzanie zbiorów pomogło kilku naszym gościom przypomnieć sobie o swoich polskich korzeniach. Wycieczka ta też była wielkim wydarzeniem dla pracowników muzeum, gdyż po raz pierwszy przyjmowaliśmy taką wycieczkę i oprowadzaliśmy po naszych zbiorach za pomocą tłumaczy dla głuchoniemych. Było dla nas wielkim przywilejem, aby móc przyjąć tę grupę i uczyć się od siebie na wzajem.
